Katmai Conservancy's March 6, 2019 11:30 Facebook post with a video re: flyovers, bears seen in King Salmon, beluga whales seen in Naknek River:
Katmai Conservancy's Facebook group member's question: "Do you happen to know if the park staff has done a fly-over of Brooks yet?"
Katmai Conservancy's (Sara Wolman's) reply : "...they’ve done a few supply runs to the maintenance caretakers out there. No bears yet, but some have been seen in King Salmon so maybe soon!"
Katmai Conservancy's Facebook group member's reply to Sara Wolman: "...it looks like King Salmon has had a relatively mild winter and an early breakup of ice on the river as seen on the cams. The pics of the bridge construction showed little snow too. Makes me worry for “early bears” with little food."
Katmai Conservancy's (Sara Wolman's) reply : "...we had a very mild winter! Most of the rivers and lakes have been completely open for weeks now. Belugas have been seen in the river, so keep an eye out for that on the cams. It typically is a bit warmer in King Salmon than Brooks, so maybe that’ll keep the bears asleep a bit longer. We’ll have to wait and see what happens. An interesting weather year for sure.?
