DETAILS:
"Fat Bears, Warm Waters, and the World's Last Great Salmon Run"
Saturday, Feb. 15
11 a.m. Eastern time
Forbes Library, 20 West St., Northampton, MA
Alaska's Katmai National Park is famous for its fat bears.
And Katmai's bears are fat thanks in large part to the park's proximity to Bristol Bay, home to the world's largest natural salmon run. Nearly half of the world's wild salmon come from Bristol Bay.
Presenter Stacey Schmeidel is fortunate to have spent the last two summers at Katmai, volunteering for the National Park Service.
In this talk, she'll:
- introduce you to some of some of the very fat bears she has met at Katmai
- outline the importance of salmon to the bears, and to the rest of the region
- describe some of the risks to Katmai's extraordinary ecosystem
- and explore why this matters -- a lot -- to us, in Western Massachusetts.
Open to all at no charge. Suitable for adults and children.
NOTE: Can't attend in person? I'm hoping to live stream at this link :
