"...A tip if you are wondering if you are seeing 83 in the J, he kind of sits to left more typically than other bears fishing there and often faces slightly toward the far side of the river where other bears typically face straight toward the falls." (p 00:33)

856 made his 2022 10th Anniversary Bearcam Debut at approximately 00:50 AKDT. Ranger Tammy Carmack had observed 856 at Brooks Camp earlier in the 2022 season, but this is the first time 856 has been observed on the bearcams during the 2022 season. Visually Obvious Changes to Katmai's (Brooks Camp's) Environment:[]

kcanada shared some images (#1 & #2) and information regarding visually obvious changes to the environment that we can see on the Explore.org live cams (p 12:11).:

"One thing I like looking for every new season are changes to Katmai’s environment. What’s the island look like (sadder every year)? Is the Magic Nanny Tree still there? (Yes, thank goodness, it will still be a safe spot for current and future generations of cubs).

Two years ago the big surprise was the washed out closed trail that was a real change in the lower river, changing where the bears rested and fished as the salmon may also have altered how they maneuvered in the lower river.

This year, I’ve noticed that the rock in the far pool is different. It’s moved, and maybe has had some of it broken away.

On the left side are 2021 snaps and on the right are 2022.

It looks like it has moved slightly downriver and rather than being a flatter, table-like, surface it is now angled downward. Grazer’s cub looked like she was surfing on it this morning.

I think Walker and 474 are going to have to adjust from using it as their armrest in the fall.

It makes me think about all we don’t see. The force of water moving through the river to obliterate the closed trail and now to move this rock."

Mike Fitz, Resident Naturalist with Explore.org shares his thoughts on Kcanada's observations (p 12:29):

"Brooks Falls is a relatively stable geologic feature, but it does change as your photos document. I suspect the rock moved due to ice rather than simply flowing water. If there was a flood big enough to move that rock, then we'd have seen other major changes to the river. Plus Lake Brooks is a large basin and buffers the river from sudden fluctuations in precipitation or springtime melt.

A big block of ice moving downriver during spring breakup would have a lot of mass as well as momentum. It's the only feasible way I can envision water having the force to move a rock of that size."

477 Sara, the Oldest Known Sow to use Brooks River, Returns to Brooks Camp:[]

477 Sara is the oldest known sow to use the river. She was an adult in 2001, meaning that she’s at the very least 26 years old now. She’s older than Otis, and has had 4 known litter of cubs, and has bright white claws.
