Bears seen in 2020:[]

This table will be used to document the bears that have been seen so far in the 2020 season.  It will primarily be updated using information obtained from current and former park staff, however, if you know of a bear we are missing, please suggest that it be added where appropriate, and include photos or other documentation of it being seen.  Pictures and detailed information are organized by month below the table.

Please Note:  The following abbreviations are used in the chart below:

C = Courting

COY = Spring Cubs / Cubs-of-the-year

D = Darted / Ranger Michael Saxton DNA study

FHV = Falls High View cam

FLV = Falls Low View cam

MS = Official Bear Monitoring Session

UD = Unsuccessfully Darted  Ranger Michael Saxton DNA study

YO= Years Old

YRL'ng = Yearling Cubs (1.5 year old cubs)

2020 Season KNP & Preserve Lists of Bears Seen in the 2020 Official Monitoring Sessions: These lists were sent by Ranger Lian Law via email to mazey on April 5, 2022. "I have attached a list of bears monitored. I will work on getting the 2020 subadults up on Flickr (but it probably won't happen until late next week sometime). As for 2021, I haven't been cleared by the bear monitor yet to put pictures of the subs because I know there is still some debate on photos/ID. They won't start their season until the end of this month so if it does happen, I won't have photos up until much later." Note: This was a preliminary list. See the April 14, 2022 post below.

2020 Season KNP & Preserve Lists of Bears Seen in the 2020 Official Monitoring Sessions: This updated list was posted in chat on April 14, 2021 by Ranger Lian. "Hi folks, I know some of you have been waiting for this list. So here are the bears monitored in 2020 and 2021."

Detailed Information & Pictures re: Bears Seen 2020:[]

2020 season:[]

April 2020:  []

2020.04.??: Courtney from Explore posted an update in April on the bear cam season for 2020. We plan to do everything humanly possible to bring you bear cams this summer. We are already in conversation with the park about best case vs. worst case scenarios, and fully plan to go live unless the act of setup puts our installer’s life at risk. We like him and we’d prefer to keep him around ;) As with everything in the world right now, we are taking it all day by day. We know how much it would mean to have these cameras online, and that’s why we will do all that’s in our power to make it happen. Thanks for your support, patience, and kindness.

May 2020:[]

2020.05.??:  Courtney from Explore posted 2 updates in May on the bear cam season for 2020.

Update #1: Hi friends! I know we're feeling the heat of summer, so I'm here to check in and answer what I can regarding the upcoming camera season. For the featured comment: we are still on track to go live with the assistance of local help. This would allow us to keep our installer from traveling and bypass any quarantine-related issues. The cameras are due to go live later than usual, but we're still looking at sometime in June. Obviously these are unprecedented times and this is an unfolding situation so we will take it day by day and keep you informed. If you have questions, ask them here and I'll answer what I can. If everything goes according to plan we have a couple of fun surprises for 2020 too!

Update #2: I noticed a few people "disliked" my last featured comment 😂I'm sorry if I offended anyone, but I promise I'm doing my best to communicate the realities of the situation.

Just popping in to update everyone: yes, we are still on track for rebooting our beloved bear cams for the summer. The timeline might be slightly later than normal, but no word of a significant delay yet. If everything goes according to plan, we still get to go live at some point in June. If there are any concerns or new hiccups we will let you know, but please know that we are as motivated to get our Katmai cams up as you are to watch them!

2020.05.11:  Katmai National Park and Preserve Facebook posted a "current flyover" NPS photo with the blue of Lake Brooks and Naknek Lake on 5/11/2020. You can still see ice around Brooks Camp.[]

June 2020:[]

2020.06.08:  Courtney from Explore posted an exciting update on the 2020 bear cam season on 6/8/2020.

A few of you have tagged me asking for an update, so let's do an update! Tech boots are on the ground starting 6/15. The plan is to upgrade the internet to a more stable setup. Hardware for the install is currently in Anchorage being transported to King Salmon this week.

Our techs should be able to send us some install photos, which we'll share here as we get them. Bear Cam 2020 for the win!

2020.06.09:  Mike Fitz stopped in chat on 6/9/2020 to announce that he would be explore.org's Resident Naturalist again this year...and the crowd went wild!

"Good afternoon everyone. Bearcam season is fast approaching and I’m pleased to announce that I’ll be joining you once again this summer as explore.org's resident naturalist. There have been some major changes in my small world, including moving across the U.S. to northern Maine. Due to the pandemic, I won’t be traveling to Brooks River this July. However, along with Katmai National Park rangers Brooklyn and Naomi, we have dozens of live events in the works such as twice-weekly text chats, many play-by-plays broadcasts, and our classic live chats.

Work to secure the bearcam connection to the outside world will begin on June 15. The solar-powered battery system at Brooks Falls survived the winter, so technicians will be focusing their efforts on re-establishing the wireless connection between the webcams at the river and the radio towers on Dumpling Mountain. Hardware for the installation is currently in Anchorage and will be transported to King Salmon this week.

I’m looking forward to sharing the experience of watching bears and salmon with you. Bearcam is an important part of my life and I pledge to work especially hard to make the experience meaningful for you too. This summer, I’m particularly keen on watching how the hierarchy at the river sorts itself out. Last year, we saw 856 remain on top. But, he’s about 20 years old and has been the river’s most consistently dominant bear since 2011. That’s a long time to maintain the rank he does. If 856 remains healthy, I think he stands a good chance of remaining very dominant and taking advantage of the opportunity dominance affords like greater access to estrous females and fishing spots. Other large, dominant males like 603/68 may have other ideas though. What bearcam storylines are you looking forward to watching?"

Mike Fitz shared a July 4, 2019 photo of 856 (right) challenging 603/68 upstream of Brooks Falls on 6/9/2020.

After Mike Fitz made his announcement, Courtney stopped in chat. "Cat's out of the bag, Mike is hanging out with us this summer! Some photo updates from our tech for those who're interested in Bear Cam progress." Courtney shared photos (#1 and #2 ) of equipment being prepared and loaded for transport to Alaska from California.

2020.06.12:  Due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, Ranger Naomi and other Rangers and personnel have had to quarantine in King Salmon for 14 days. They then had to have a negative Covid-19 test before they could travel to Brooks Camp.

Ranger Naomi Boak stopped in chat on 6/12/2020."Hello Everyone! I'm at Brooks in the Visitor Center. It is a beautiful day, sunny and warm. The boat ride here was the fastest I've ever taken. No bears yet, but lots of voles and hares. My camera battery needs charging so all I have is my iPhone. Once I figure out how to transfer the pix I took on my phone, I will post them here."

2020.06.13:  On 6/13/2020 Ranger Naomi Boak dropped by chat with an update and photos from Brooks Falls, photos #1, #2 and #3. "Hello from Brooks Camp! It is an incredibly gorgeous day so, of course, I headed to the falls. No bears, sorry to say, but I was there for three hours and it was just beautiful. Several eagles soared way up high for around 15 minutes. One juvenile perched atop the eagles' tree. Spectacular sight. Three mergansers were diving like crazy and hanging out on Backpack's rock. And I saw 2 fish try to jump the falls. Probably trout. I took a video so you could hear the sound of the falls, but the wifi is too slow for me to upload right now. I'm keeping my eyes open for bears. There is scat, but nothing really recent."

Permission to use her NPS photos posted on the bearcam comments

2020.06.14: Ranger Naomi Boak commented in chat on 6/14/2020  sharing photos (#1, #2, #3 and #4 )  of the Ranger's boat trip to Brooks Camp on 6/13/2020. Ranger Boak also stated that a sow with cubs and a very large boar were seen.

"Hey Bear Lovers. Decided to stop in to the Visitor Center again to post some pics. I apologize for not responding to each of your wonderful enthusiastic comments individually, but D is making it difficult for me. So here are some pics of our trip across Naknek Lake. Leaving Lake Camp, on the way and our arrival at Brooks. Also, the gorgeous juvenile eagle who is getting bigger and balder, perched atop what I call the Eagle Tree at the Falls. I haven't seen a bear yet, but two of the maintenance guys said they saw a sow with 3 very large cubs at Lake Brooks and at VR housing, where I live. That is either 273 with her yearlings or one of the 3 sows that hasn't emancipated her cubs yet. They also saw very large boar. Enjoy the pics.
Batteries were delivered by helicopter to the repeater on Dumpling yesterday afternoon. And for those of you long time bear cam fanatics, guess which piece of equipment is not working? I'll check back tomorrow for your answers."

2020.06.15:  Ranger Naomi Boak stopped in chat on 6/15/2020 to provide 2 updates, #1 and #2.

Update #1: "Good Day, everyone. Another beautiful day at Brooks Camp. No pictures for you yet, but Ranger Tammy and I had visitors at our cabins yesterday evening. A sow with three 2 year olds! They were huge! No commitments on ID's yet, but what a great welcoming sight it was."

Update #2: "No more closed trail. It has completely washed away. The island is getting smaller, almost no tree left. And the big log at the falls has moved. More to come."

Ranger Naomi Boak had exciting news to share in chat on 6/15/2020. 719 has returned to Brooks Camp with her 2 yearlings. "Bingo Everyone! Our first bear photos of 2020. And you will be happy to know that it is....drum roll please...719 and two yearlings!!! (Confirmed by Ranger Tammy)."  The family can be seen on the spit area, photos by Ranger Naomi Boak #1, #2, #3 and #4.

Ranger Naomi Boak announced in chat on 6/18/2020 that 94 was observed with her three 2.5 year old cubs on 6/15/2020. No photos were available. Will 94 Emancipate her cubs?

2016.06.16:  Ranger Naomi Boak stopped in chat on 6/16/2020 with an update : "We have a very strong east wind. I don't think we will see any bears today. With so much wind, they can't smell what's out there, so it's like us moving around blind. They (cam techs) are still in King Salmon. Too windy for any of our boats today."

Kam shared a pencil and chalk drawing of 719 and her 2 yearlings on 6/16/2020. The drawing was inspired by Ranger Naomi Boak's 6/15/2020 photo (#3 photo posted above on 6/15/2020).

2020.06.16:  Ranger Naomi Boak stopped in chat on 6/17/2020 and announced that both 402 with her three 2.5 year old cubs and 151 Walker had been seen and identified by Ranger Tammy.

"BREAKING NEWS from the Brook River Gazette -- Ace cub reporter Ranger Tammy was on evening duty by our cabins when she spotted bear 402 with her 3 - 2.5 year old cubs walking by. Shortly after that she saw a boar -- bear 151, Walker. Reportedly, he was huffing and agitated. Then 402 and cubs began to run and 151 pursued. That's the news from the Brooks River."

2020.06.17:  More news came on 6/17/2020 from Ranger Naomi Boak. 273 was seen in camp with all 3 of her now yearling cubs. Ranger Naomi shared 2 photos, #1, 273 alone and #2, 1 of 273's 3 yearlings.

"Afternoon NEWS ALERT. Bear 273 was just seen with all 3 yearlings here in the middle of camp. She's a little skittish at this point, so I was not able to get pictures of her and all her cubs, but here is one picture of her and of one cub."

Explore Resident Naturalist Mike Fitz gave a Bearcam update on 6/17/2020  and shared 2 gifs, #1 and #2.

Bearcam Status Update, June 17, 2020:

"Technicians are on the ground in the King Salmon area and began working on the camera network earlier this week. The techs recently upgraded some of hardware and circuits in King Salmon, which will improve the stability of the network. Additionally, the solar-powered battery system at Brooks Falls survived the winter, so technicians will now be focusing their efforts on re-establishing the wireless connection between the webcams at the river and the radio towers on Dumpling Mountain. Thank you for your patience as we wait for more information.

Last week, I discussed one storyline I am interested in following. Today, I’m thinking about salmon. Specifically, when will the salmon arrive at Brooks River?

In late May and early June, tens of millions of sockeye salmon are spread across thousands of miles of the North Pacific and Bering Sea. Guided by instinct, they swim as much as 50 miles per day to reach their natal watersheds. The first sockeye typically enter freshwater within a few days of the summer solstice, and the run usually peaks during the first week of July. Afterward, it gradually declines to a trickle and usually stops in late July. About 80 percent of Bristol Bay’s sockeye run arrives within two weeks, a precise arrival window given the disparate places sockeye start from and the distances they must cover to return. It is a wave of salmon unlike any other on the planet."

Brooks lodge posted photos by Lodge employee Tristan Eames on 6/17/2020. In the 3 photos, a moose is seen walking under the lower river bridge,#1, #2 and #3.  Awaiting permission to post the photos.

2020.06.18:  Courtney from Explore stopped in chat on 6/18/2020 to give an update on upgrading equipment. Courtney shared 4 photos, #1, #2, #3  and #4.

"I'M ON A BOAT!  Well I'm not, but the techs are. As promised, here are a few pics of upgrading the link to Dumpling, and some really helpful folks on a boat, without whom we would be missing out on bear cam."

128 Grazer returned to Brooks Camp on June 18, 2020 with her 2nd litter, 2 spring cubs. Her arrival is exactly 4 years to the day that she arrived at Brooks Camp with her 1st litter of 3 spring cubs. Ranger Naomi Boak announced 128 Grazer and her cubs arrival in chat on 6/18/2020 and shared photos, #1 and #2.

"BREAKING NEWS! 128 Grazer has returned with two spring cubs. Photos by Ranger Tammy."
