Bears seen in 2019:

This table will be used to document the bears that have been seen so far in the 2018 season.  It will primarily be updated using information obtained from current and former park staff, however, if you know of a bear we are missing, please suggest that it be added where appropriate, and include photos or other documentation of it being seen.  Pictures and detailed information are organized by month below the table.

Please Note:  The following abbreviations are used in the chart below:

C = Courting

COY = Spring Cubs / Cubs-of-the-year

D = Darted / Ranger Michael Saxton DNA study

FHV = Falls High View cam

FLV = Falls Low View cam

MS = Official Bear Monitoring Session

UD = Unsuccessfully Darted  Ranger Michael Saxton DNA study

YO= Years Old

2019.05.19:  On June 1st, 2019, Brooks Lodge Facebook posted a Kara Stenberg (howlsthunder) video which was taken on 5/19/2019 . The video is titled "POV Landing at Camp" and Kara describes it as "Timelapse video of landing on Naknek Lake at Brooks Camp in Katmai National Park, Alaska. The aircraft is a DHC-3 Otter."

On 5/20/2019 a Brooks Lodge employee filmed a sow with 1 yearling. The sow appears to be bear 132 and her cub. This Melissa Freels video (which she posted on YouTube for the employee) shows a playful 132 and her cub.

2019.05.26:  A5/26/2019 post on Brooks Lodge Facebook stated: "Kara's regular speed bridge video." The video by Kara Stenberg gives a wonderful tour and view of the new bridge across the Brooks River.

2019.05.28:  On Tuesday May 28, 2019, Brooks Lodge Facebook posted a photo by Kara Stenberg titled "The view from Otis's office." Brooks Falls can be seen from the far side of the platform. The water coming over the falls appears to be swift and fast.

2019.05.29:  Brooks Lodge Facebook posted a Kara Stenberg photo of a porcupine on 5/29/2019 . "Good morning (Porcupine)." Porcupines are seen fairly often at Brooks Camp and occasionally bears are observed with porcupine quills around their face and paws. Cubs seem to be a common victim.

2019.06.06:  Ranger Naomi Boak stopped by the chat on Thursday, June 6, 2019 and posted that she and Ranger Christine had seen both a courting couple at Brooks Falls and two subadults in camp. Her attached photo of the courting couple did not post to the chat. "Hey Bear Fans. What a bear day. It is my day off, so Ranger Christine and I went to the Falls around noon. We saw a courting couple. I have a couple of pictures. I have no idea who the male is and the female looks like the sub with socks we've been seeing around the bridge and the Valley Road.  
Late this afternoon two subs were running around camp and Michael Saxton had a really tough job getting them to leave. They just kept running in circles. Sorry, but I don't have any pictures -- too busy keeping out of their way. One was a very light blonde and very small. The other was about 1.5X her size and medium brown. I'm sure we'll get pictures soon. The weather has been unusually beautiful. Sunny and clear. That won't last. Mike Fitz will be here late next week. More updates when i can get to you."

2019.06.16:  Mike Fitz stopped by chat and commented on Sunday June 16, 2019 . He shared that 634 Popeye was seen on Saturday evening June 15, 2019 at Brooks Falls and posted a photo. He commented "We're busy preparing for the upcoming bearcam season. As noted in the featured comment there is no set date for the bearcams to go live, so we ask for your continued patience while the bearcams are fine tuned for live streaming. More than just a little fine tuning is needed at the river mouth, however, due to the construction of an elevated bridge. Technicians are hard at work to install cameras from multiple locations on the bridge."

"Bear activity along Brooks River has been relatively quiet over the past few days, although several bears have been seen in the area. I can confirm that 32 Chunk, 132 and her yearling, and 634 Popeye have been here in the past few days. At least two or three subadult bears have wandered through too. The first trickle of sockeye salmon have arrived as well."

2019.06.21:  On Friday June 21, 2019, Ranger Naomi Boak stopped by the chat, commented and posted a photo of a sow with 3 yearlings . Ranger Boak commented "Hello everyone. I can see there is a great deal of anxiety here in the chat room. Rest assured we are working as fast as we can to get those cams working and those bears coming to you live. The Explore technicians are still here, busy, busy. As soon as we know something, you all will be the first to know. And, a good sign: Mike, John and I are working on the content for our first chat. So hold on. I know from personal experience that bear cam addiction can be a serious thing. To tide you over, here is a picture of a sow with three yearlings out by the spit road." Both 128 Grazer and 747 were seen on June 23, 2019 in this video by Lani H . As 128 is fishing in the riffles, 747 approaches to "court" her. 128 does not seem to be receptive.

856 was seen eating his catch by the island as an eagle flies by on June 23, 2019 , video by fklyer 7474.

On June 23, 2019 and unknown bear was observed on the grassy bank area of the riffles. The ?male bear resembled an unidentified bear that was seen being confronted by 747 on June 25, 2018 . Both videos by Ratna.

2019.06.24:  856 showed quite the display of dominance at Brooks Falls on June 23, 2019, video by Victoria White . He first chased 634 Popeye above the falls, then circled around downriver. He can be seen chasing down and attacking an unidentified bear in the riffles. When the altercation ended, 856 can be seen sitting  and then lying down as the other bear slowly walks away.Mike Fitz commented on 856's behavior. "Looks like he was hot and tired and needed a rest! The other bear, possibly 801, remained submissive as he moved away like he was expecting 856 to continue to challenge him."
