KNP&P held the First Annual Fat Bear Tuesday Contest on September 30, 2014, a one day event. In 2015, the Fat Bear Contest grew into a week long event and continued annually until at least 2019 .

On October 4, 2019 during a reddit event Mike Fitz , former KNP&P ranger and current Resident Naturalist with Explore.org provided this information on how the Fat Bear Tuesday Contest came to be:
In response to: "Who came up with that genius idea (Fat Bear Tuesday Contest)...?
Mike Fitz replied: "Yours truly and a couple of other rangers came up with the idea in 2014. We were browsing photos of posted by a webcam viewer of bears we see at Brooks River in July and September, and we thought, "wouldn't it be fun if we posted before and after photos and let people choose who they think is the fattest bear?" That idea became our first "Fat Bear Tuesday" which has since been expanded into Fat Bear Week."

"Welcome to the first annual Fat Bear Tuesday!
Who will be crowned the fattest bear of 2014? Throughout the day rangers will post "dueling" pictures of bears commonly seen on the #bearcam. These photos will show the same bear in July and September to illustrate the bears’ relative weight gain during the summer. This is a single elimination tournament to decide which bear is the fattest of them all!
How to Participate: You are voting for the fattest bear. For each set of two bears, vote with your "likes" for the bear you think is the fattest. Likes will be considered final one half hour after the photos are posted. The most liked bear advances. One will be crowned the 2014 Fat Bear Tuesday Champion! The first matchup (284 vs 500) starts in 30 minutes at 8:30 AM AKDT.
