This bear can be hard to identify. 94 is a medium-sized adult female with a uniform medium-brown coat, tapered muzzle that turns up at the nose, dark eye rings, and spade-shaped, proportionally large ears. In the fall, her coat is darker, but still appears uniformly brown. She is often very fat later in the year.

94 will often sit on rocks at Brooks Falls in July. 94 is often seen fishing at Brooks Falls and the riffles in July and in the fall at the river mouth in the lake.

During years when she is caring for cubs, 94 often fishes around the bridge and mouth of Brooks River; places used by large numbers of people. This tendency is not a trait shared by all mother bears. 94's tolerance for the presence of people may present her with an advantage. By fishing in these areas, she is able to exploit habitat used less frequently by adult male bears, perhaps providing her cubs with greater levels of protection.

Although the bear monitoring staff at the time wasn't sure of her age, their notes indicate that 94 might have been an offspring of 236 Milkshake from a 2003 litter. Will Troyer, during his studies on Brooks River bears in the 1970s, documented one female bear ("Sister") giving birth at age 4."

When 94 was first identified in 2008 as a young adult female, she arrived at Brooks Camp with 3 spring cubs. Female 289 is believed to be one of the offspring of this litter.She frequently fished in the river near the floating bridge, even with large groups of people present. This indicated that she had prior experience around people at Brooks River, so evn though she was "new" in 2008 she likely used the river as a younger bear. A photo of 94 with one of these spring cubs can be seen on page 28 of the 2015 Bears of Brooks River book.

2008.07.24: 94 and her 3 spring cubs ran into single female 608. One of 94's cubs got scared away from the rest of the 94 family group by 608 and ran around camp for several minutes looking for 94 and the other two spring cubs. In this case, all the rangers could do was try and hold people traffic to try and give the tiny six month old cub space to search for 94. After circling the visitors center in an unsuccessful attempt to find mom, the cub climbed a tree and began making a loud barking sound that could be heard throughout Brooks Camp. After several stressful minutes of listening to the cub cry for it's mom, a ranger finally heard movement in the bushes near the overlook. 94 emerged from the grass with her two other spring cubs and called her lost cub out of the tree. Once the family group had reunited, they continued on their way. Despite the obvious stresses of trying to care for three spring cubs in the proximity of so many people and other bears, 94 continued to be seen near Brooks Camp every day.

In July 2011, 94 was courted by 856. Courting is a process through which adult males habituate adult females to their presence before mating. During this courtship the pair spent extensive time along the Brooks River's north bank, in the area between the Cultural Site Trail and Brooks Falls. As 856's consort, 94 approached the falls much closer than she would have as a single bear.
Courting brown bears are promiscuous. While 856 fished at the falls, 94 mated with other bears. During 2011, 94 mated with at least four males: 45 Tatonka, 218 Ugly, 747 "Colbert", and 856.

"Good afternoon everyone. There has been plenty of bear activity on the river during the past few days and it should only increase over the next two weeks. There are many new bears in the area, most of which I don't recognize. Some of these bears like the female with this yearling (?) cub in the photo below often do not approach the wildlife viewing platforms, so I have only gotten fleeting glimpses of her. 402 and her three spring cubs returned to the river this week as well.
Many of the “regular” bears that use the Brooks River are here right now like 94, 410, 435 Holly, 489 Ted, 480 Otis, 409 Beadnose, and 402. However, many of the dominant males that were here in July like 218 Ugly, 814 Lurch, and 856 have not been seen yet. We don't know why this is. Bears alter their patterns of movement quite often. In 2012, for example, 489 Ted wasn't seen along the Brooks River until late July. This year, however, he was here much earlier. For those other bears, perhaps fishing is still successful for them elsewhere right now."

"Last week on live chat with Roy and I, I briefly mentioned how many fish I counted certain bears catching and eat least partially consuming. Here’s the run down:
Bear 94: 49 fish in about 3.5 hours Bear 402: 11 fish in 35 minutes Bear 410: 41 fish in about 3.5 hours
These were the bears that I could watch most easily over the two days I happened to be counting. Above all else this demonstrates just how much food is in the Brooks River right now. Bears are selecting “fresher” dead and dying salmon and ignoring many others. What the cams can’t see now are the thousands of dead salmon that litter the bottom of the Brooks River. Below is a photo I took recently of what I can see near the floating bridge.
Many of these salmon are partially consumed, but there are many whole fish too. This is not a lean time of the year for bears and they are taking advantage of it. For bears, gluttony is a way of life in autumn."

2018.07.30: 94 often treed her cubs when she would fish in the oxbow area. On 7/30/18 this behavior was observed at least 3 different times. On one of those occasions, video by Lani H, 94's cubs would not come back down so she climbed the tree to retrieve them. 94 climbs up the tree at 0:19 and comes back down at 2:13 with her 3 cubs following. 94's 2018 offspring ~ 2019 yearlings were observed urinating during the 2019 season. The largest yearling is a male, the middle-sized yearling is a female, and the smallest yearling is a female. Mazey's October 16, 2019 11:23 commentMckate also captured video of the three yearlings urinating and shared these findings: "The two blondes appeared to be female and the darker one male based on my pee videos, but I've been told that I need more than one video to confirm a cub/sub's sex so will be watching closely again this season" Mckate also clarified her finding with this information: The large dark yearling is male and the two blondes, (large and small or mid-sized and small depending on semantics) are female."

"One of the highlights of my June 2019 trip to Brooks was seeing 94 and her trio of yearlings , which included 224 and 225. They were so much fun to watch, and 94 seemed more youthful and playful than she had with the cub in her previous litter. This family made this one of my favorite trips to Brooks. I have not taken much time to ID 224 and 225 in these pics, but I am sure some of you here can sort them out! :-) The beach pics aren't the best quality, but I think they are still fun!" Note: The photo was initially identified as 482 but is 94. On 4/25/2020, Truman Everts shared photos of 94 with her 3 yearlings and 94 with 1 of her 3 yearlings, #1 and #2. Truman noted "The (evidently 94) family group snuck in to the falls area, quietly, at about 21:46. Birgitt recorded a very interesting interaction between 94 and what appears to be a subadult that gets too close to one of her cubs, video from 7/6/2019. 94 can be seen charging the subadult twice, at 1:30 and 3:26. One of her cubs decides to bluff charge the unseen subadult at 2:07. Cubs learn survival skills from their Mothers as evidenced by the cubs behavior.

2019.09.??: Ranger Naomi stopped in chat in early September and commented that "both 94 and 482 were seen at Margot Creek with all their cubs." Ranger Naomi further shared "there may not be any family groups here at the falls or in the lower river, but there sure are a lot at Margot Creek. Here are some photos taken by Tina Scheffler." Here is one of my favorite pics of 94 from my trip last week. She made her way up from the cutbank to the falls and then back down again. Grazer and cubs were nearby, but their encounter in the riffles was peaceful. I heard you actually saw this moment--94 standing on the rock in the river in the riffles--on the cams. It was great!" Brooks Camp visitor David Hunter captured seven photos of 151 Walker courting 94, #1,#2,#3,#4,#5,#6 and #7. The photos appear to be from the same time as the three 6/29/2021 videos above.
In the evening of 6/29/2021, 94 could be seen resting under the lower river bridge. Ranger Naomi stopped in chat the next morning (9/30/2021) and posted a photo of a sow who she had observed under the bridge and asked for ID help. "Morning. So happy to see my guy 89 Backpack at the falls. I haven't been able to get there to see him yet. I can't wait! Last night I tried but was in a bear jam. This beautiful bear was resting under the south ramp to the bridge. It's paw seemed slightly injured. Any idea who this is?" The consensus was 94." The consensus was 94. Deanna Dittloff (aka deelynnd) created this 2022 season video of 94 and her 4 spring cubs, "Bear 94 and Cubs 2022."
In 2020, 94 altered her prior litters behavior and kept her 3rd known litter of cubs into their 3rd summer. Sows known to use Brooks River do not typically change the number of years they keep their litters of cubs, but 94 is an example of when it does happen. Could keeping those cubs an extra year help prepare 94 for being the 1st sow known to use the Brooks River to successfully emancipate the full litter of 4 cubs? Only time will tell.
Interestingly, 128 Grazer has kept her two 2.5 year-old cubs into their 3rd summer in the 2022 season. Salmon have been abundant over the last several years. Does a plentiful salmon run play a part in a sow's willingness to keep their offspring into their 3rd summer? The Bears of Brooks River have so very much to teach us...the lessons just keep coming year after year...NEVER STOP LEARNING!
You can learn more about the Brooks River sows that have had 4 cub litters in 402 Returns with Four Cubs, by Mike Fitz, former KNP&P ranger, presently the Resident Naturalist with Explore.org. 402 currently holds the title of the most fecund bear known to frequent the Brooks River area. She has had 7 known litters of cubs. 236 Milkshake held the title of most fecund sow, until 402 returned to Brooks Camp with her 2015 litter, her 6th known litter. Will 402 return with her 8th known litter in 2022?

"I have had a hard time going through my pics of 94's quads since I returned home. It was shocking to arrive in Anchorage from Brooks only to receive a message from our river guide telling us that one of the cubs was killed a few hours after we left. I finally took some time to go through a few quad pics today. I love this one because of the baby teeth--zoom in and look ... they are so cute! I don't want to speculate on which of the cubs was killed, so if you have thoughts on that, please don't mention in comments on the pic. Thank you!"

Another rainy day in Katmai, but any day in Katmai is a day in bear paradise. I took these of 94 and the quads this morning, sorry for the poor quality. The little ones sounded like tiny pterodactyls as three out of four followed into the river. My guess is that they were hungry. One remained on the shore, but kept a close eye on it's mom and siblings."

"Good evening everyone from Brooks and welcome back bear cams! The fall colors are looking really vibrant here and we finally got some sunlight today.
That being said, I know people who are watching the cams now and are seeing 94 with three cubs. Late this afternoon in the lower river, one of 94’s cubs was killed by another bear (currently no ID). We are privileged to be able to watch bears live out their wild and natural lives here and sometimes that includes nature’s harshness, and this is one of those times. We understand the loss of one of 94’s cubs is an emotional moment for many people who have been following her story and indeed for many park staff. Survival is a challenge for all bears but that is especially true for cubs.
For those looking for more specifics of the incident- while I was not there to witness the event, several visitors and rangers did see the encounter and reported that 94 was fishing in the river upstream of the bridge while her cubs on the bank and another bear (speculated as a male) grabbed one of the cubs. 94 and the other bear then fought before the other bear ran off. One of the cubs was briefly separated but has since been reunited. 94 was currently fishing the lower river with her three just prior to me writing this comment."

2023.09.18: 806 tries to pirate a fish from 94's cub. 94 quickly intervened. 806 appeared to have a right front paw injury from the altercation between these two mother bears. Ranger Naomi reported that 806 and her cub were observed walking on the beach near camp shortly afterwards and 806 appeared to be walking fine at that time.

2023.10.03: KNP&P's bear monitor, Ranger Tammy Carmack, observed 402's female yearling being injured by 94. Ranger Tammy shared this information with LTC in a direct message at 20:17 AKDT:
"You can tell people on Webcam that I saw what happened to 402s yearling. 94 attacked her pretty viciously on the spit. "protecting her cubs" She's lucky ... there are at least 3 bite marks. If 402 hadn’t returned, she most likely would have been fatally injured."
The live cam that provides a view of the spit and the mouth of Brooks River is off for the month of October to respect the privacy of the native family making it impossible for cam viewers to have observed the altercation between 94 and 402's female yearling. Shortly before 19:46 AKDT, cam viewers did observe 402 and her female yearling grazing under the permanent bridge after 94 attacked 402's yearling. From the KRV cam, viewers observed a bite mark on both sides of the yearling's neck posterior of her ears; and wounds on her left hip and ankle. 402's female yearling has recently appeared curious about 94's two male yearlings, see mckate's September 21, 2023 video above for an example cam viewers observed.

In July 2011, 94 was courted by 856. Courting is a process through which adult males habituate adult females to their presence before mating. During this courtship the pair spent extensive time along the Brooks River's north bank, in the area between the Cultural Site Trail and Brooks Falls. As 856's consort, 94 approached the falls much closer than she would have as a single bear.
Courting brown bears are promiscuous. While 856 fished at the falls, 94 mated with other bears. During 2011, 94 mated with at least four males: 45 Tatonka, 218 Ugly, 747 "Colbert", and 856.

2021.06.29: 151 Walker is on a mission to mate with 94, 6/29/2021 video by markindify. He can be seen chasing 94 in the oxbow area to the spit. The chase slows down but continues along the spit to the spit road and eventually the valley road.

Known Litters of Cubs:[]
Motherhood, especially for bears, is a difficult endeavor. Mother bears must use all of their skills and experience to raise cubs in independence. 94 is a mother who has repeatedly demonstrated the ability to meet the challenges of raising cubs. 94 was estimated to be 5 years old in 2008 when she was initially identified with her 1st known litter, 3 spring cubs. The success of mother bears raising their first set of cubs is often hampered by a lack of experience, but 94 was able to overcome this hurdle. Two of 94's three cubs from this 2008 litter likely survived to be weaned . Since then, 94 has gained more maternal experience. During July 2019 she was in the midst of raising 3 yearlings who represent her 3rd known litter. While 94 hasn't been fortunate enough to wean all of the cubs she has given birth to, she has demonstrated that she possesses the required skills and instinct. In the near future, we may be watching one or more of her former cubs competing as adults at Brooks Falls.

94 returned to the Brooks River with 3 spring cubs, her 3rd known litter. The three spring cubs were all dark in coat color. 2019: 3 Yearlings (Largest is male, Middle-Sized is female, Smallest is female)
On June 21, 2019 at 10:04 AKDT & 10:08 AKDT , Katmai Conservancy Ranger Naomi commented and shared a photo of of a sow with 3 yearlings, 94 maybe(?):
"Hello everyone. I can see there is a great deal of anxiety here in the chat room. Rest assured we are working as fast as we can to get those cams working and those bears coming to you live. The Explore technicians are still here, busy, busy. As soon as we know something, you all will be the first to know. And, a good sign: Mike, John and I are working on the content for our first chat. So hold on. I know from personal experience that bear cam addiction can be a serious thing. To tide you over, here is a picture of a sow with three yearlings out by the spit road. (see the pic below)"

During the 2019 season, 94's 2018 offspring were observed urinating. The largest is a male, the middle-sized is a female, and the smallest is a female. Mazey's October 16, 2019 11:23 comment:

94 kept her 3rd litter of cubs into their 3rd summer. The family group remained together after they returned to the Brooks River for the 2020 season on June 15, 2020.

2022: 4 Spring Cubs, one killed on September 17, 2022. The largest cub with light fur on the back is male.
94 returned to the Brooks River with her 4th known litter....4 SPRING CUBS! 94's mother, 236 Milkshake had 2 litters of 4 spring cubs. Quads apparently run in the 236 Milkshake family tree.
On September 17, 2022 Ranger Lian posted an update to let chatters know that one of 94's spring cubs had been killed by another bear earlier that day. The bear was not identified, but was speculated to be male.
2023: 94 returned to Brooks River with 2 yearlings. Larger yearling is a male. The smaller yearling is also a male (9/21/23).

Although the bear monitoring staff at the time wasn't sure of her age, their notes indicate that 94 might have been an offspring of 236 Milkshake from a 2003 litter. Will Troyer, during his studies on Brooks River bears in the 1970s, documented one female bear ("Sister") giving birth at age 4.

Offspring: 289 (female) is believed to be one of the offspring from 94's 2008 litter. 810 (male) is believed to be the remaining offspring from 94's 2015 litter.
