Known Offspring Of: There is speculation in the 2018 bear monitoring notes that 912 "Mufasa" is a male offspring of 39's 2016 litter , however there is no way to really confirm the link between subadults to the mother and siblings without DNA results.
Genetics Study Samples Obtained: There were no known genetics study samples obtained from 912 by Ranger Michael Saxton from 2016 through 2018.

Mckate's ID Tips: 912 has a long, narrow, slightly roman muzzle, long oval ears, and copper colored head. He starts the season medium brown and is almost black by fall with just a hint of blond on top of his head. His long muzzle, neck, and legs give him the look of a thoroughbred.

Distinctive Behaviors:[]
Per mckate: 912 seems equally comfortable fishing the falls and the lower river. Like his brothers, he occasionally fishes the lip. 912 seems as serious about his fishing as his flirting. In 2020 he courted 831, 901, 902, and 909.
912 is a serious angler who, like his brothers, fishes the lip, but prefers the J. He is usually around for a good part of July and sometimes returns in September.
While 912 is a serious fellow, he still carves out time to play with his brothers and younger bears. He will happily share his scraps with others particularly his brother, 99.

Before You Die Guy captured video of 39's 3 emancipated cubs sitting under the Brooks Falls platform early in the 2018 season. They are seen briefly from 2:21-2:24. Two of these cubs were seen 3 times by the bear monitor and were classified as independent subadults in 2018.

"I did not make it to Brooks Falls in Katmai National Park this year, but here is a video from September 2019 that I have not yet shared. This is bear 912 ("Mufasa) at a remote creek that connects to Naknek Lake. We also saw this bear, whose mom is believed to be bear 39, at Brooks Falls on the lower river just a few days earlier. 912 is a gorgeous bear."

I saw 40 bears at once from the platform.. It was crazy. I also met Grazer and her two cubs on the path to the falls. She was VERY intimidating to see her so close. Here is a picture that I got of Grazer fishing on the lip of the falls. It was taken in the early morning of July 18th. Her two cubs are out of the picture to the side. 2021.08.09: 913 and 912 on the lip, 8/9/2021 video by mckate. "That's 913 in front and 912 behind. Chatters often ask how to tell them apart. You can see that 912 has more of a Roman nose which is quite narrow. 913's muzzle is deeper, and he also has larger and fluffier ears. As for coloring, 913 is beginning to darken like his brother, but has what I call a light saddle cinch mark on his side. That mark is the easiest way to ID him this time of year."

"In the thumbnail that's 27 on the left, 912 in the middle, and Vincent on the right. 27 and Vincent don't seem as relaxed playing with 912 as they do 903. I actually can't recall 912 having played with either of them before.
I love the road meet-ups because you get a better idea of their sizes. 27 is pretty good sized for a four-year-old, but still not as tall as 912 who is five. We don't know Vincent's age. He showed up in 2019 so could be a four or five-year-old. After seeing him next to 912, I'd lean toward him being five."

856 pounces for fish in this video captured by mckate. 856's first pounce was the most impressive, maybe because he knew 912 "Mufasa" was watching. The rest of his pounces looked pretty stiff. It's hard being a big old bear trying to pull subadult moves.

912 "Mufasa" and 384 play in this video captured by mckate. 384 kept interrupting 912 "Mufasa's" play with 903 "Gully", so 912 finally broke away to play with 384. So nice of him to get on the ground to seem less threatening, or is this part of a boar's courting behaviors to get the sow more habituated to him? Being 4.5 years old, 384 is probably experiencing her first estrus, and 912 eventually became interested in more than play, but she declined.:

2024.07.08: 230 "Ben" and 912 "Mufasa" play in twelve22's video. These two young adult boars had so much fun, they moved their play to the spit to play even more. The abundance of salmon providing plenty to eat provided the viewing pleasure of multiple sated bears that were playing all along the river.:
