Known Litters of Cubs:  None as of 2018 season

Genetics Study Samples Obtained:  There were no known darting attempts, successful or unsuccessful, by Ranger Michael Saxton in 2016 or 2017.

Identification:[]

2015 Bears of Brooks River book:  500 is a small subadult with very blond fur in July. By September her fur darkens to a dark and mottled blond. Like many subadults, she has large ears.

2016 - 2018 Bears of Brooks River books:  500 Indy is a small female subadult with very blong fur in July.  By September, her fur darkens to a dark and mottled blond.  When shedding, she has a noticble circular shed patch on her forehead.  She also has large upright ears like many subadults.  500 was one of the smallest independent bears at Brooks River during the 2014 and 2015 summers, and as such faced challenges posed by other bears.

Distinctive Behaviors:[]

2015 Bears of Brooks River book:  When she first arrived in July 2014, 500 was often seen with another blond bear of similar size and color. Sibling bears sometimes associate with one another for days, weeks, or months after their mother pushes them away. In rarer instances, siblings may even den together the following fall after become independent. This may explain why #500 was seen with the other bear. Her suspected sibling, however, was not seen after early July. This bear may be the offspring of #409. Regardless, she was the smallest independent bear at Brooks River during much of 2014 and as such faced challenges posed by other bears. Still, this is a stage of life that all bears must survive before they reach adulthood. #500 found an abundant supply of food by scavenging dead fish even though she was often displaced by older, larger bears. As part of the growing pains of subadulthood, she would often challenge and/or approach larger bears. Many of these bears ignored her, but some would vigorously chase her away - even cubs from other litters .  In these situations, she was likely just testing her limits and was constantly reminded of her place in the hierarchy: the bottom.

2016 -2018 Bears of Brooks River books:  In 2015, 500 would visit Brooks Falls, but could not compete for fishing spots.  500 found an abundant supply of food by scavenging dead fish even though she was often displaced by older, larger bears.   As part of the growing pains of subadulthood, 500 would often challenge and/pr approach larger bears.  many of these bears ignored her, but some would vigorously chase her away - even cubs from other litters .  In these situations, she was likely just testing her limits and was constantly reminded of her place in the hierarchy: the bottom.

Life History:[]

500 Indy is believed to be the largest of the three 2012 offspring of 409 Beadnose's 2012 litter.  500's siblings were one male (the middle-sized sibling) and one female (the smallest / runt).

2012:  Spring Cub with 409 Beadnose and her 2 Littermates (717 possibly), Speculated[]

2012 is believed to be 500 Indy's year of birth.  500 is believed to be the largest of 409 Beadnose's three 2012 spring cubs.  500 Indy's two littermates, 1 male (middle-sized cub) and 1 female (smallest, runt) are believed to have spent the 2012 season together with their mother, 409 Beadnose.  There is speculation that 717 may possibly be the smallest (runt) of 500 Indy's littermates.

July 2012:[]

On the afternoon of July 2, 2012, 409 Beadnose returned to Brooks Camp with 3 spring cubs, her 3rd known litter.  500 Indy is believed to be the largest of those offspring.  2012.07.??:  The family group can be seen in this July 2014 Explore video :

July 2014:[]

When this bear first arrived as an indepent subadult in July 2014, 500 was often seen with another blond bear of similar size and color, believed to be her male sibling (the medium-sized 2012 offspring of 409 Beadnose).  Sibling bears sometimes associate with one another for days, weeks, or months after their mother emancipates them.  In rarer instances, siblings may even den together the following fall after they become independent of the mother.  This may explain why 500 was seen with th other bear.  500's suspected sibling, however, was not seen after early July during official bear monitoring sessions.

500 Indy LR Brooks falls katmai 2016.10.02 video by Erum Chad (Erie)

2016.10.04:  This video by Erum Chad (Erie) is labeled as 503 Cubadult and 500 Indy.  After some viewers compared some photos and other videos, there was discussion about if the bear believed to be 500 was actually 201.  201 is included in the 2017 Bears of Brooks book on page 43.  Take a look and see what you think.  The 2017 book says that 201 was not observed during the 2016 season, but keep in mind that only reflects observations during official bear monitoring sessions and 201 is only infrequently observed during the fall months.:

How 500 Indy Got Her Nickname:[]

The number assigned to this newly independent subadult by the bear monitor, Ranger Leslie Skora, was 500. 500 just happened to be the next number to be assigned for the 2014 season. 500 was often observed by the park staff running around the lower Brooks River and with a number like 500, Indy just became a name used for her. (Indianapolis 500)
