2015.10.19:451 is observed with only 2 remaining spring cubs. It is not known what happened to the 3rd spring cub that is no longer observed with the family group. What appears to be most noteworthy in the two following videos is that both of 451's remaining spring cubs seem to be happy and healthy...but just two short days later (October 21, 2015 ~ see below) one of those two remaining spring cubs began showing signs that something (CAV1) was very wrong.
At approximately 10:27 in the morning on October 19, 2015, Mickey Williams captured this video of 451 with her two remaining spring cubs.:

??:??: This video by Lee Block "begins the morning of October 24th where the mother and living cub keep vigil even while the mother tries still to get a response from the deceased cub. The video continues as the mother and cub eventually leave to go fishing, and in the interim three National Park Service bear techs arrive by boat to retrieve the cub so that they can have a necropsy performed on the animal to understand what caused its demise.
After the cub is removed, the mother and cub return a while later and discover the body gone, but stay in the area for quite awhile and then finally trace the dead cub's scent to the exact location where the rangers loaded the dead cub onto a boat to carry it away.
It's quite poignant -- but also amazing what can be captured on a live web feed. Hats off to Explore.org for their webcams, and to the National Park Service for allowing as to see realtime reality TV with no commercials or contrived scripted gravitas."

The necropsy of 451's deceased spring cub was performed at the USGS National Wildlife Health Center in Madison, Wisconsin. It is a Department of the Interior run lab that is staffed by USGS personnel. Ranger Michael Saxton's conversations with USGS personnel (scientists) in Anchorage, Alaska, and the Alaska Department of Fish and Game representatives lead Ranger Saxton into discussions with the National Wildlife Health Center. The National Wildlife health center has a phenomenal track record and the park service has dealt with them in the past, with birds for instance. The National Wildlife Health Center was interested in doing the necropsy of 451's deceased spring cub, so the process to send the spring cub's remains to them for necropsy was initiated.
In addition to the necropsy being performed at the USGS National Wildlife Health Center, samples were sent to researchers at various different institutions and the park staff will benefit from far more indepth analyses than they would from a standard necropsy. Ranger Michael Saxton expects some really fascinating information to come from the samples provided to the researchers at those other institutions.

2015.10.29: Ranger Roy's October 29, 2015 10:56 comment:
"The gross necropsy of 451’s cub was completed yesterday. The only lab result that has returned is the rabies test, which was negative. The rest of the report is a description of what the pathologist observed, weight (29.7kg, 65.5lbs) , length (94cm, 37”), etc. As we said in our chat, it will take some time for the remaining lab results to return, so be patient. At some point we will share a more complete interpretation of the cub’s condition, and if it can be determined, the cause of death.
Regarding the mystery lump on the spit: When Michael, Leslie, and Bob arrived yesterday afternoon they found that it was, indeed, an adult male bear. As it was too large for them to move, they collected samples for the state and for the DOI Lab in Wisconsin. Leslie will need some time to identify the bear, but it was not Otis or Lurch (easy to ID them). There was no obvious cause of death. All three biologists are away on other aspects of their jobs today, so I don’t have any further information.
I know that, for many of you, this will be devastating news. It is important to keep in mind that were it not for the cams no one would even know about these deaths. By the time staff would have returned in the spring, scavengers and decay would have removed most signs of these animals. Sure, there may have been a few bones or bone fragments, or some hair, but that would have been the extent of our knowledge. What we have been given is the chance to learn not only more about the how these animals lived, but also how they died. That is a rare opportunity that should help soften the blow of this latest news.
I want to thank all of you for reporting the appearance of the mystery lump. Without your careful observation, we would have never known of it. I have said it before, but it “bears” repeating: You are an amazing, dedicated community of stewards, and you are contributing to a better understanding of the bears of Katmai. Thank you all."

"As I was packing to leave Brooks, in July 2017, 451 paraded her three adorable spring cubs (27, 28 & 29) past the lodge dining room..." Truman Everts shared a 7/8/2017 photo of 451 and her 3 spring cubs on 6/2/2021."This shot of the whole gang, 451, 27, 28 & 29 was taken just 6 minutes before the group shot posted 2 hours ago. Four minutes before the Brooks Lodge dining room begins serving at 7am. I'm usually there a minute or two early, to stake out "my" little shy corner, and prepare for the hot food. At 06:56, Mum & spring cubs were right in my path...so I snapped a few shots with the telephoto lens, then took the long way, to the door on the far side of the dining room. The previous pic was taken once I was safelyinside...so it's through a window, and thus looks a bit flat. This one is more 3D. Lucky cabin-dwellers were peeking from their porches...so, for privacy, I green'd them out."

Cam viewer and park visitor NWBearLove92 captured 8 photos of 451 and her 3 yearlings on 7/6/2018. They were shared in chat on 3/15/2020. Photos #1,#2,#3,#4,#5,#6,#7 and #8. The cub on the left in photos 4, 5, 7 and 8 appears to have a porcupine quill embedded just below its nose. It is not uncommon for curious cubs to have encounters with porcupines and be seen with quills in their faces and paws. The quills will usually work their way out in a few days.

In the Explore Bearcam Week in Review Blog posted on 7/20/2018, Mike Fitz discusses 451's pirating behavior. "451 is a bear who has rarely visited Brooks Falls. In past years and much of this summer so far, we were much more likely to see here in other places along the river. She’s familiar with the river and its salmon, but fishing at the falls may be a skill she never developed. This might be why she’s more apt to scavenge/steal from other bears. Typically, the bears hovering on the fringes of the falls do so because they can’t compete for fishing spots at the falls, don’t know how to fish there, or find too much competition to fish."

2019 season: []
451 was not believed to have been observed on the web cams during the 2019 season. Mazey posted a question in chat about whether 39 had been confimed as the unidentified sow with 2 spring cubs. Katmai Conservancy Ranger Naomi Boak replied in chat: "Don't worry. I spoke directly to Ranger Leslie after you asked about 39 and 451. She confirmed 451 but said she could not confirm 39." This conversation occurred in July. We do not have a July or September 2019 list of bears that were seen by the bear monitor so this cannot be confirmed. On 7/18/2019, 3 subadults who resembled 451's cubs were observed alone together on the spit. Without the bears who were seen in July list, this cannot be confirmed as them.
2020.06.24: An unknown sow with 3 spring cubs was first observed on 6/24/2020 late at night, video by JG. The sow and cubs were seen walking along the spit road. The light was too low to identify the family.

2015: 3 Spring Cubs Yulia Napalkova filmed 451 and her cubs on 10/5/15 on the lower river. On October 7, 2015, JBirdyHome captured this footage of 451 with all 3 of her spring cubs on the Explore live cam , one of the last times (if not the last time) the entire family group was observed together. By October 21, 2015 sow 451 was observed with 2 remaining spring cubs; and on that day one of her remaining spring cubs, a female, was observed stumbling as it walked . On October 23, 2015 , sow 451 lost a second spring cub from this litter when the female spring cub expired in view of the live cam as a result of being infected with CAV-1 . When last observed in the Brooks RIver area during the 2015 fall season, 451 still had one remaining spring cub from this litter. Both remaining family group members appeared in good health at that time. Their return to the Brooks River area in 2016 is an event that is anxiously awaited. 2016: Single Female (no remaining yearlings)
451 was never officially identified in 2016. On 7/25/16, Ranger Dave filmed an injured bear at the lower river platform who some thought could be 451. On 7/29/16, 128 Grazer was seen defending her cubs (not seen in the video by Mango) against a bear who appeared to have a right rear leg injury/limp similar to the bear seen on the 7/25/16 video. Amalia Garduno also captured this incident. This bear was also speculated to be 451. If this was 451 in either video, she was not seen with her remaining cub which would have been a yearling in 2016.
2nd Known Litter: 2017[]
2017: 3 Spring Cubs
451 returned to Brooks Falls on 7/7/17 with 3 spring cubs, both photos by Ranger Anela Ramos. One cub is noted to be very small. 451 and cubs can be seen in this 7/9/17 Melissa Freels video on the lower river. One of 451's cub can be seen riding on her back. 451 stops to nurse her cubs and then passes by the lower river platform. 451 has a known old injury to her back right leg. In the video, you can see her limping at 8:17. At 11:03, you can see how she rests her right rear foot in a distinct way. 451 and 2 of her 3 spring cubs (one is out of the frame) are observed in this Kara Stenberg photo on Brooks lodge Facebook, posted 7/21/17. The family is seen on 7/21/17 at the lower river, video by Brenda D. Note: Brenda's video unavailable as of 2021. Brooks visitor and Cam viewer Scammin Scammin captured 451 and her 3 spring cubs on 7/24/17 during a visit to Brooks Camp. The 3 energetic cubs and 451can be viewed in this 7/25/17 video by Cheryl Burnside. The 451 family was seen in the riffles on 7/31/17 in a video by flyer 7474. 451's known right rear leg injury is apparent in this 2017 video by Parker Wachs. On 9/16/17, Cam viewer and park visitor RiverPA/Lee photographed451 and her thriving cubs at the lower river. 2018: 3 Yearlings
451 was seen with 3 yearlings on 6/30/18. This Brenda D video shows the family on the lower river and spit area. 451's known right rear foot injury is apparent. Note: Video unavailable as of 2021. Thumbnail left for context.
