23 was initially observed during the fall of the 2019 season. Mckate's ID Tips: 23 has a slight roman nose with an indentation on the upper muzzle and medium sized ears with no blonde. His coat is solid brown in September with his head being slightly darker. He has a neat beard by October. He is solidly built carrying most of his weight on his back end. During the 2019 season when this subadult did not have a bear monitoring number that was known to cam viewers and park visitors, chatters called this bear various unofficial nicknames which included "Scrappy", "Beggar Bear" and "Little Bear".

Mckate's Notes: 23 often puts his head down in a shy manner and rolls his eyes from side to side showing the whites. Bear cam viewers called him 'Scrappy' because he liked to sit below the far pool catching the big boars' scraps and because he was generally fearless even approaching 856 for scraps.

2019.09.??: 23 "Scrappy" Male Subadult with 503 video by Melissa Freels. "503 greets a young bear who would rather wait for salmon scraps than play. " Melissa also shared this information about the video on 01/04/2020: "There was some talk about this bear last night, so I uploaded this video and wanted to share. I call him Little Bear, but others have called him Beggar Bear or Scrappy (maybe other names, too). He's the one who waits for scraps just down river of the Office. Anyway, I thought this interaction was kind of funny. 503 wants to play, but Little Bear just wants to wait for scraps from 856. Then, near the end, 503 seems to give him a look like, "Man, you are either crazy or very brave." At least that's my take on it":

Scooch captured 4 photos and a Gif of 23 "Scrappy" taken on 9/14/2019, shared in chat on 3/26/2020. Photo #1, #2, #3, #4 and GIF. Mckate thought the bear could be an unidentified male subadult called "Scrappy" by chatters. The photos appear to be 23 "Scrappy". It was also noted by Mazey that this bear has a dark, vertical mark or indentation between and just below his eyes. Mckate posted a 9/13/2019 video of Scrappy above "Scrappy waits for leftovers" that appears to be the same bear. The vertical line below and between the eyes is noted.

23 was not thought to have been observed on the cams in 2020.
How 23 Got His Nickname:[]
23 does not have an official nickname. The NPS has moved away from naming bears at KNP&P. While waiting for an official ID number, 23 was referred to as "Scrappy" by bear cam viewers. 23 received this chatter nickname due to him waiting downriver from the office for scraps. This is not an official nickname.
