Mckate's Notes: NPS staff first identified this sub as female in 2019, but it wasn't until the spring of 2022 that we learned it was male. 22 was also seen by the bear monitor in the falls of 2020 and 2021 and is a good match for the sub formerly known as PJ. 22's parentage is unknown. Note: Mckate made the connection to the above 9/29/2019 photo as being a subadult we had observed extensively for 2 years in 2020 and 2021 (unofficially nicknamed PJ ).
Mckate's ID Tips: 22 has a long narrow muzzle, close set eyes, long ears, and a semi-prominent hump. While his coat is dark he has lighter grizzled areas on the top of his head and down his shoulders. He appears to have some remnants of a natal collar. In his second year at the falls he was notable for his long legs and ability to climb straight the falls rather than use the fish ladder. Mckate's 22 YouTube playlist

Mckate's Notes: 22 was first seen on the cams in August of 2020. He pretty quickly took to the lip after arriving at the falls. He'd apparently been studying 821's lip sitting fishing style which he was mimicking. It wasn't long before he began standing though and appeared to have little fear of going over which he did a number of times as he was learning to fish this difficult spot. 22 even successfully caught fish by jumping off the lip into the far pool until 151 put a stop to it.
22 isn't the most playful of bears, but seems comfortable around other young males like shy 907. He is fearless when it comes to holding his space on the lip and has even been known to stand up to 128.

22 wants to fish the lip, 8/1/2021 video by mckate. "I think this is the young fellow who frequently fished the lip last August and was sometimes mistaken for 821. Before I realized he was 22, I started calling him PJ which is short for 'far pool jumper' because he was known to leap from the lip into the far pool. He's unfamiliar with 128 who wasn't around last August when he taught himself to fish up there, and she's not likely to allow an unknown male near her cubs. He might have to go back to the lip above the far pool which he did fish somewhat successfully last season."

2023.09.29: 22 "PJ" prefers not to be monitored by Ranger Tammy Carmack in the bear monitoring stand at the cut bank in this video by mckate. 22 was uncomfortable enough seeing Ranger Tammy, the bear monitor in her chair that he watched her for a bit, had a shake, left his fish, and backed off the cut bank. There must have been times when he's fished the lip with people watching from the platform, but this one just happened to be in an unexpected place.:

22 does not have an official nickname. The NPS has moved away from officially naming bears at KNP&P.
While waiting for an official ID number, 22 was referred to as "PJ"/"Pool Jumper" by bear cam viewers. This is not an official nickname.
