Identification:[]

Per an email from Ranger Lian Law to mazey on 4/7/2022, "196 is unclassified and unknown meaning that the bear monitor did not put an official age or a sex down." The October 6, 2020 NPS photo appears to be a spring cub (coy) with an X-shaped natal collar.
Mckate's ID Tips: "There is speculation that 196 might have been 171's lost yearling because of the X shaped natal collar. 196 was not seen in 2021."
171 had 2 spring cubs in 2019. One of those cubs was lost on July 20, 2019 for unknown reasons. 171's remaining cub was seen for the rest of the season and appeared healthy. That cub had a distinct X-shaped natal collar as seen in this video by Anna Bader recorded between 8/30-9/2/2019. 171 and her cub are observed from 2:42-3:01. Could 171 have brought her cub to the den in 2019, returned in 2020 and become separated from her now yearling? Some yearlings retain their natal collar. This scenario is entirely speculative and cannot be confirmed. Note: there were no other sows missing a spring cub in 2019 except for 900 and that cub was believed to be deceased.

Distinctive Behaviors:[]

Per an email from Ranger Lian Law to mazey on 4/7/2022, "The notes indicate that it was a COY and that it seemed used to being on its own and did not show any signs of distress when it was first observed." COY is cub of the year or spring cub.

September 2020:[]

2020.09.20: Could this have been 196 in this 9/20/2020 mckate video? "We caught glimpses of this bear in late July. Goldi wonders if it might be 171's abandoned yearling. If so, it's doing a great job of getting ready for the winter."

2021.07.13: Could this very small bear that looks yearling size possibly be 196? 7/13/2021 video by mckate. "I'm trying to think of any two-year-olds who are this small. It really looks more like a yearling. Thank goodness there are plenty of fish now for the smallest of bears. Note the merganser mom and ducklings in the foreground."
