17 was initially observed during the 2019 season. She was also seen by the bear monitor in July 2020, 2021, and 2022. She was also seen in September of 2020. A photo from the white board in 2022 shows 17 listed as female.
Mckate's ID Tips: 17 has a straight muzzle and small triangular ears that she tends to hold forward. Her coat is reddish blonde with darker legs. She probably sheds out to brown based on the NPS July 30, 2019 photo. Mckate's 17 YouTube Playlist

2019: Subadult Female, 1st Year Officially Identified[]
17 was initially observed during the 2019 season. The sex of this subadult was not determined by KNP&P bear monitoring staff at that time. KNP&P Ranger Naomi Boak shared this newly identified bear's monitoring number with cam viewers on June 19, 20020 in her 13:08 comment:

Four boars vie for a fish accompanied by a spectating sow video captured by mckate. That was 28 "E" with the catch. 913 "Moomba" grabbed half of it, and 151 Walker came for it sending 913 over the lip. 32 Chunk got the half away from 913 in the jacuzzi. 151 ran down to see if he could grab it, but didn't want to mess with 32. At least 28E got to keep half of his catch. 17 (aka "505F") watched it all from the sidelines.:

2023.07.24: 148 makes 17 nervous in this video mckate captured. This is the older sow who has been hanging out by the near pool for a few days. mckate kept hoping we'd get a better look and got her wish. We still have no idea who she might be. 17 clearly doesn't know who she is either. UPDATE: In September of 2024, thanks to Amy Incillo working with Ranger Tammy Carmack, KNP&P's Bear Monitor, to identify a bear Amy photographed at Brooks Camp on July 9, 2024 and July 10, 2024, we now know that this older sow is bear 148. How 17 Got Their Nickname:[]
17 does not have an official nickname. The NPS has moved away from naming bears at KNP&P.
"505F" was used as a place holder name until 17's identification number assigned by the KNP&P bear monitor was shared with cam viewers. Please note, for a period of time (a few years) 17 was believed to be 505's offspring, however that is no longer believed (since August of 2023). At the time it was believed, the "505F" place holder was used.
