Mckate's ID Tips: 164's most identifiable feature is the dark vertical indentation in his upper muzzle which was why he was known as Bucky Dent until we learned his number in 2022. He has a long slightly upturned muzzle, bright blonde oval ears, and a dark blonde to medium brown coat depending in the light.

164 is known for his innovative fishing technique. In 2021 when the lip was crowded and the jacuzzi was occupied by more dominant bears, 164 spent time in the plunge pool below the falls. He could be seen looking up and watching for fish falling back down. He was very successful catching them with this technique.

Mckate's Notes: In 2021 a ravenous 164 arrived at the falls in late July. He initially attempted fishing the lip but competition for spots was fierce and, after being bit and shoved off by 821, he seemed kind of nervous about the prospect. He even jumped voluntarily at one point rather than get pushed off. So resigned to fishing below the falls, he began immersing himself in the J and catching fish as they attempted to jump the waterfall. This was an innovative tactic that he'd explored a little the previous fall. Rangers said they had never seen a bear successfully fish this way before. Later in the season 164 spent time studying 903 and 821 on the lip and even made a catch or two. It will be interesting to see if continues to occupy his J spot next season or decides to give the lip a try again. In mid-August 164 fished the lower and frequently played with his friend 29.

But I've been delighted to find a few face shots (I posted my fav {it's sharper, clearer} a few days ago...I'll attach it below for those who missed it). This one has a soft quality to it...I think because he's frosted both with water from the river, but also mist from being so close to the falls. Which, in his case, I guess, is super appropriate."

"The tension had been brewing for a while. 821 had been fishing the sweet spot on the conveyor belt when 164 moved up and took his space. 821 caught a fish, and then decided to go fish in the office where he had no luck. In the meantime, 164 was doing well on the conveyor belt, so 821 decided he wanted that space back. He moved over by 164 and they did some trash talking which eventually erupted into 821 jumping 164 who refused to relinquish the spot. It isn't all bad blood between these two though, because I have at least one video of them playing last season."

Then 907 appeared to have grabbed 164 "Bucky Dent's" face and it went downhill from there. Kind of like yesterday when 164 "Bucky" punched 907 a little too hard in the chest and that brought a quick end to the play. They are touchy! "Bucky" was jaw popping and backed 907 up pretty easily even though he's smaller. 907 has been trying out a more dominant personality this season, but it didn't work on "Bucky":

Next we see 164 "Bucky Dent" running into the riffles. 151 Walker runs after 164 and fights and dunks 164 "Bucky Dent" who appears to be stuck on lower ground. 164 "Bucky Dent" fights until 856 enters river and stands and stares down 151 Walker, allowing 164 "Bucky Dent" to retreat. 164 "Bucky Dent" was seen later in the day looking good though he does have a small wound on his neck.:

FloppyRightEar created this gif series (#1, #2, #3, #4, #5, #6, #7 & #8) of 903's efforts to make the face of the falls a more bear friendly environment (p 20:52). Birgitt pointed out (p 21:34): "Interesting. We've now seen both 164 and 903 try to remove that tree. So bears appear able to conceptualize the manipulation of an object they don't like with a goal in mind.":

164 does not have an official nickname. KNP&P has moved away from officially naming bears at KNP&P.
While waiting for an official ID number, 164 was referred to as "Bucky"/"Bucky Dent" by bear cam viewers. 164 received this chatter nickname due to the very prominent vertical indentation in his upper muzzle. This is not an official nickname. 164 has also been referred to as "Shower Bear" due to his unique fishing style at the base of the lip of the falls to the platform side of the jacuzzi. This is also not an official nickname.

Please note: In August 2023 a rumor began circulating that 164 "Bucky Dent" was likely a "Margot Creek bear" offspring due to his "dent"/cowlick. The unofficial Facebook post that incited this rumor was a "joke"/"a post that was made just for fun" stemming from a discussion regarding 128 Grazer's maternity of 164 "Bucky Dent". There is no evidence/research of any kind to support that bears with cowlicks/"dents" are likely from Margot Creek or Halo Bay as the "joke"/"just for fun" post stated in fun.
