138 was first classified as a male subadult in 2020. There is some thought amongst chatters that 138 could be the fall version of 212.
Mckate's ID Tips: 138 has round blonde tipped ears, an upturned muzzle, and long neck. His coat is reddish brown, and he has muttonchops early in the season.

Mckate's Notes: In 2020 138 mostly stuck to the riffles and seemed to draw the interest of a number of other young bears. He had raucous play sessions with both 831 and 99, the latter really getting the better of him suggesting that he doesn't have experience playing with other males. 138 returned to the riffles in mid-July 2021 and was around off and on for a month. He made at least one attempt to fish the lip.

2020.07.21: 913 and 99 are curious about the new guy 138, 7/21/2020 video by mckate. "This is pretty long, so I sped it up for fun. (You can slow it down with the gear if desired.) 99 was quite curious about the new guy. He was trying to be subtle, but just couldn't help himself. He finally goes over to Walker's fishing hole displacing 912 who also has to come check out the new sub. This behavior reminds me so much of 503.

Here comes trouble, 7/28/2020 video by mckate. 812, 138, and 99 in that order. Now that so many subs are dark brown, it's getting challenging to tell them apart. 912 was down on the lower river at this time, so at least he can be ruled out. I think 138 is enjoying getting to know the other young males, even if they are a bit intimidating at times.

Fortunately 27 has a body bubble that's just as small as his. Of course 27 might have been glad to have 99 between him and Divot. 2023.09.24: There is speculation by some cam viewers who are typically successful at identifying the bears that 138 and 212 are the same bear identified as two different bears in different seasons. 212 arrived for the 2023 season on 09/24/2023, so 138 would have also arrived if 138 & 212 are in fact the same bear.

Why 138 Does Not Have an Official Nickname:[]
138 does not have an official nickname. The NPS has moved away from naming bears at KNP&P.
While waiting for an official ID number, 138 was referred to as "Red." This is not an official nickname it was simply a "placeholder" that was used until the bear monitoring number was assigned and released to cam viewers/wiki users.
